In today’s blog post, we are going to discuss the major computer networks mainly named LAN, MAN, and WAN.

So basically, what is a computer network? A computer network is a set of computers that are interconnected to each other for the share of data through various devices.

They are distinguished by the variations of sizes as discussed in this article.

Types Of Computer Network

There are three major types of a computer networks:-

  1. LAN (Local Area Network)
  2. MAN (Metroplitan Area Network)
  3. WAN (Wide Area Network)

1.LAN

LAN stands for Local Area Network. This network is of small size and is used only in computers that are placed to a minimal distance such as in-home, schools, offices, etc.

The geographical area required for this network is very less.

This network can be both wired and wireless.

It is more reliable as it has a small network.

The speed of the LAN network is 100 Mbps – 1000 Mbps.

Traffic is less in LAN.

Errors in the LAN network can be detected easily.

Propagation delay is very low in here.

The cost of LAN is very low as the number of wires and APs is are less.

2. MAN

MAN stands for Metropolitan Area Network. It is used to connect computer networks that are present in different cities. For example:- The computers present in a school, police station, hospital, an office can be connected through MAN.

Geographical Area is larger in Man as compared to LAN.

The distance can be from 5km to 50km.

The speed of MAN is in Mbps.

Traffic in MAN is medium.

Propagation delay in MAN is more than LAN.

It is more costly than LAN.

Devices that are used in MAN are costly as the number of wires and APs is more.

3.WAN

WAN stands for Wide Area Network. It is used to connect computer networks across countries.

The geographical area of WAN is the largest.

It requires a wireless medium for the transmission of data mainly.

If this uses the wired medium then the cables are placed underneath oceans and seas.

It has Low-speed data that is from 56 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps.

Traffic in MAN is highest.

It is very costly.

It is very difficult to maintain as if the damage of the wire occurs, the transmission gets disturbed.
